Beginning of a New Era

Zuko smirked and caught the flame. “Better.” He slowly extinguished the flame with his hand and said, “You should be able to control fire in very stressful situations. Like you know what would happen if you accidentally allowed one of these trees to catch on fire. The whole forest would go up in flames, and soon the whole island.” Zuko says all that as if it were no big deal. He then conjures up a fire ball larger than what him and Aang usually practice with. He passes it gently to Aang. “Okay, now be steady. Don’t allow it to consume you. Don’t lose control.

Aang took a deep breath as he received the flame, he concentrated hard. He could feel the flame wanted to enlarge but kept it at the same size. The monk smiled as he felt the fire become calm, calm enough from him to bend rings of fire around his hands. He passed it back to Zuko, with his signature ‘over the head flair’. Aang shrugged, “I guess I was just out of practice. I feel a lot better now,” he nodded.

Zuko rolled his eyes at Aang’s ‘over the head flair, but then he could help but smile a little bit. Aang had improved so much, it was almost as if Zuko was unneeded. Catching the flame, he quickly extinguished it and said, “Okay well we should probably finish planting these seeds and then get back to everyone else. I think it’s about time we get to the Southern Water Tribe. Zuko began planting the rest of the seeds and said quietly, “Nice job by the way.”

Zuko sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Aang. The point is for you to catch the flame, not singe the seeds the leader of the village gave to us to plant. We only have so many of these,” he said pointing to the pouch of seeds. “Try again. This time catch the flame so you don’t hurt nature… You’re a monk aren’t you supposed to be protective of the earth?” This time Zuko aimed the flame a bit to Aang’s right so he’d have to move to catch it so the flame wouldn’t catch the nearby tree on fire.

Aang jumped to the side, catching the flame into his chest, bending it back to him with his fist. He stood ready for more.

Zuko smirked and caught the flame. “Better.” He slowly extinguished the flame with his hand and said, “You should be able to control fire in very stressful situations. Like you know what would happen if you accidentally allowed one of these trees to catch on fire. The morning after.

Zuko raised an eyebrow. “Go to the fishing thing, or keep going to the South Pole? I mean I guess we should get moving pretty soon.” Zuko shut his eyes. “I almost forgot what vacationing felt like. It’s nice. But we probably should go see what the others are up to. Who knows, we might catch Sokka training with the Kyoshi Warriors again.”

“What? No, the fishing thing,” she said stifling a laugh. “We probably should…eh…” she said at the mention of Sokka. It wasn’t really that she disliked him…okay maybe it was, but she was trying to get along with everyone for Zuko’s sake. She found Sokka to be a bit sexist and annoying at times and she wondered what Suki even saw in him, but maybe that was exactly why. Maybe she balanced him out. At any rate time was ticking so she decided to go take a bath and get ready for the day. She smirked at Zuko, “I’m about to go take a bath, care to join me?”

Zuko felt her tense at the mention of Sokka. He figured if she spent more time with him, they would find some kind of common ground. However, he didn’t want to pressure to spend time with someone who annoyed her. That would just make her tense and then she would be unhappy…. At least even more unhappy then usual. At the mention of the bath Zuko blushed lightly then started getting up. Smirking he said, “I’ll grab the towels.”

The morning after.

Zuko smiled and placed his hand on her arm, stroking it with his thumb. “Morning.” His voice was all crackly and husky from the long night sleep. “Breakfast?” He moved the chair next to him out from under the table with his foot. “We slept for about 12 hours, you’ve got to be hungry.” Getting up, Zuko closed the shades so the sun light wouldn’t flood into the room. “Later we could pack some food and maybe go down to the beach. There’s a fishing contest.”

Her stomach confirmed that statement with a low rumble, “Yeah, I guess I am,” she smirked, leaning on him, her hair falling over his shoulder. She read the article about the fishing contest and shrugged, “I dunno. Not really my thing, but if you want to go, I don’t really mind.” she grabbed an apple off the table as well, and munched on it as she continued to read the paper over his shoulder. She found the article about Suki and Sokka amusing, despite not like Sokka. It was kind of silly to her, some of the kinds of articles they had in the paper, but it was a small island, there couldn’t be much to report on, so that made sense. “Should we see if the others want to go as well?”

Zuko raised an eyebrow. “Go to the fishing thing, or keep going to the South Pole? I mean I guess we should get moving pretty soon.” Zuko shut his eyes. “I almost forgot what vacationing felt like. Zuko woke up next to Mai. He stared at her peaceful sleeping face. She was beautiful.

Not wanting to wake her, Zuko pulled the sheets up to her shoulders and walked over the door. Opening it, he found a Kyoshi newpaper. Zuko brought it back to the dining table and flipped through it while munching on an apple.

There were multiple articles telling of “the Avatar and Firelord proclaiming peace.” Continuing to flip through the newspaper, Zuko saw that there was some type of fishing contest being held later that afternoon. He laughed when he read a small article about “Kyoshi Warrior, Suki, being reunited with her boyfriend, friend of the avatar.”

Mai awoke to the morning sun streaming in through the window, which annoyed her greatly. However she’d had a wonderful night with Zuko and that made her feel really great. What they shared when they had such moments, it was indescribable.

She shifted a bit, stretched, and turned around to face him when she realized he’d already gotten out of bed. She looked up to find him at the table, reading a newspaper. She smirked, stepping out of bed, and went to wrap her arms around him, “Good morning, almighty fire lord,” she said, joking somewhat with him. She looked at the newspaper over his shoulder. She had to admit, it was a rather interesting innovation. She had no idea how they managed to make so many of them and deliver then to people.

“Well that the point, Aang. You can’t really learn control unless you’re in a place where it’s necessary to control.” That wasn’t true, but Zuko hadn’t fire bended in a while and he was practically itching to. “We’ll start off small.” Zuko planted a few more seeds and then, without warning, shot a fire blast toward Aang, depending him catching it, before it caught any trees.

Aang had been whistling planting seeds, when he turned, eyes widening at the sudden blast of fire, “WHA-AHHHH!” He spun, and as he did so, airbended the fire into the ground, singing the seed he just planted.

He turned angry, then realizing that that wasn’t the right reaction.

“Monkey feathers..”

Zuko sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “Aang. The point is for you to catch the flame, not singe the seeds the leader of the village gave to us to plant. What now?

Mai smiled and just let her lips do the talking as she held him close to her. She enjoyed this feeling, never wanting to let go of him, wanting to lay here with him as long as she could. She felt like the luckiest girl in the world. Pulling at the ties in her hair, she let it all fall around her shoulders and pulled Zuko closer to her, her hands making their way into his hair. This was the moment she’d been wanting for a while. It had been so very long since she’d been able to hold on to him like this.

Zuko smiled into the kiss and ran his hand threw her loose hair. He chuckled and said, “Is it hot in here?” Sitting up he took off his shirt and threw it on the floor. Leaning closer to Mai he kissed her jaw slowly moving down her neck to her collar bone. Zuko carefully picked Mai up and brought her to the bed where he set her down.

What now?

justabigblah:

Her cheeks still remained flushed as he spoke to her. He seriously was the only one that could make her do that, and she didn’t understand it, but it wasn’t a bad thing per say. She was just wasn’t very used to expressing what she felt, it was hard for her. “Zuko, it’s…it’s not sappy…I feel the same way. You know I’m not a very open person with my emotions, this is hard for me to convey, but you know how much I love you,” she said giving him an awkward smile. When he kissed her, she leaned into him and wrapped her arms around him when he picked her up. As he sat her down, the fact that her arms were around him caused her to accidentally pull him on top of her, which made her blush even more.

“I know, Mai.” Zuko didn’t mind that Mai couldn’t open up to him. For her, sharing even as much as she did was a big deal for her. Her not portraying her emotions easily was part of who she was, and he loved her nonetheless. Of course, he hoped that one day she’d be able to be really open with him easily. But he understood that takes a lot of time. “I know you do.” He couldn’t help but smirk as she pulled him on top of her. He moved his hand to her lower back and leaned into her, kissing her again.

What now?

justabigblah:

“Well you are royalty,” she said, smirking slightly. She continued to eat her fruit in silence before he spoke, “Well I have everything I need. And that includes you you know,” she looked down at her hands, a very light blush coming to her cheeks. She felt slightly embarrassed to say it, but it was true. Zuko meant more to her than just about anything or anyone. And that was saying quite a lot since she didn’t like many things or people.

Zuko smiled. No one had ever made him feel this way. He wanted nothing more than to just be with her forever. Zuko set down his food and took her face in his hands. “Mai. I know what I’m about to say is sappy and gross, but it needs to be said. I love you more than I could ever say. You make me smile by just being in the same room with me.. And we both know I’m not a smiley person. I don’t know where I’d be without you, Mai.” And with that he kissed her. It was a passionate heart racing kiss. He picked her up and carried her over to the couch by the window which had a view of the ocean, and kissed her again.
